This small island town on Sweden's west coast that has drawn summer visitors since the 19th century, when King Oscar II's annual visits gave it particular cachet as a seaside resort. Marstrand hosts major sailing events including the Stena Match Cup Sweden and Marstrand Regatta, and carries an unusual concentration of cafés and restaurants for a settlement its size. The town also holds a notable place in Swedish Jewish history: King Gustav III's 1775 free-port declaration brought religious liberty that enabled one of Scandinavia's first synagogues, established at Fort Fredriksborg in 1780.
