This waterfront town in Bahia, Brazil, Maragogipe sits on the Paraguaçu River upstream from the Baía de Todos os Santos, with an extensive mangrove system along the river and the Bay of Iguape. The municipality contains a large portion of the Baía do Iguape Marine Extractive Reserve, established in 2000, and is home to the Quilombo Salamina Putumuju, a quilombo community recognized by the Palmares Cultural Foundation in 2004. The wider region includes UNESCO World Heritage sites.
