Maku
Iran
This mountain city in northwest Iran's West Azerbaijan province, Maku sits in a high gorge where the Zangmar River divides the city between two flanking peaks, close to the Turkish border. It anchors Iran's largest free trade zone, which opened in 2011 and ranks among the largest in the world, and serves as a crossing point for overland travellers heading into Turkey.
