Majdal Shams is the highest-elevation town in Israel, sitting in the southern foothills of Mount Hermon near the Syrian and Lebanese borders. This pocket-sized Druze community in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights is a base for hiking the Hermon area and, in winter, the nearby Hermon ski site. The town played a role in the Great Syrian Revolt of 1925–1927, and monuments to Druze leader Sultan al-Atrash stand in the town centre.
