This port city on Madagascar's northwest coast at the mouth of the Betsiboka River, where the Mozambique Channel meets the shore, Mahajanga has a walkable centre with a dense café and restaurant scene and a concentration of historic churches. One of Madagascar's larger cities, it serves as the capital of the Boeny Region and draws independent travellers as a base for the northwest coast.
