Magnesia on the Maeander

Aydin · Türkiye

The ruins of an ancient Greek city in Ionia, Magnesia on the Maeander occupied a strategically important position in the triangle between Priene, Ephesus, and Tralles, and was settled by Magnetes from Thessaly alongside Cretans. Built on the slopes of Mount Thorax along the banks of the Lethacus river, a tributary of the Maeander, the site lies west of the modern village of Tekin in Aydın Province. The surrounding territory was known in antiquity for its fertile land, producing wine, figs, and cucumbers.
