China Liaoning Province

Lüshun

Liaoning Province · China

Lüshun, on the southern tip of Liaoning Province's Liaodong Peninsula, carries one of northeast Asia's most contested military histories: the port changed hands between China, Russia, Japan, and the Soviet Union across the first half of the 20th century, and the naval base — in operation since 1883 — remains active today. Known internationally as Port Arthur, the city sits within sight of mountains and close to the water, with UNESCO World Heritage sites accessible in the wider region.
