Lacco Ameno
Napoli · Italy
Rebuilt after a devastating 1883 earthquake that destroyed most of its buildings, Lacco Ameno transformed from a fishing village into a thermal-spa resort on the island of Ischia, at the foot of Mount Epomeo. Publisher Angelo Rizzoli shaped its modern identity in the 1950s and 1960s by building several five-star hotels that drew an international elite — among them Clark Gable, Elizabeth Taylor, and the Duke of Windsor. The town retains a yacht harbour, boutique shopping, and a café and restaurant scene substantial for its size.
