La Alberca, a village in Salamanca's Sierra de Francia, was the first place in Spain to be declared a historic-artistic ensemble, in 1940, and has since been listed among the country's most beautiful villages. Set at elevation in the mountains of Castilla y León, it has an unusual concentration of cafés, restaurants, and historic churches for its size, along with scenic viewpoints in the surrounding sierra. A Carmelite convent established in the Batuecas valley lies a few kilometres away.
