A modest town on the southwestern coast of Réunion with a black-sand beach known as a surfing spot, L'Étang-Salé sits alongside the Étang-Salé forest and is bordered by the communes of Les Avirons and Saint-Louis. The name translates as "The Salty Pond," a reference to the coastal wetland character of the area. Réunion's wider region holds UNESCO World Heritage recognition.
