This well-established spa and resort town on the southern coast of Saaremaa, Estonia's largest island, Kuressaare has been one of the country's most visited destinations for well over a century — the first recorded tourist group arrived around 165 years ago. The town centre is a protected historic area, and the oldest surviving structure is a medieval episcopal castle built by the bishops of the Saare-Lääne diocese in the 13th and 14th centuries. Cafés and restaurants are plentiful for a town its size, and the waterfront is within easy walking distance.
