This city on the Seto Inland Sea in Hiroshima Prefecture with a strong naval and industrial heritage, Kure is home to the second-oldest naval dockyard in Japan and remains an active base for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Mountains rise behind the waterfront, and the wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites. A dense café and restaurant scene adds to the city's draw for visitors passing through this part of southwestern Hiroshima Prefecture.
