Kontiolahti, a municipality in Finland's North Karelia region, is best known internationally as a biathlon venue, having hosted the Biathlon World Championships in 1990, 1999, and 2015. Set in a landscape of forests and lakes a short drive north of Joensuu, the municipality covers a large area with substantial water coverage, reflecting the lake-rich character of eastern Finland. Its name translates roughly as "bear bay," a reference echoed in its coat of arms.
