City on the Izhora River southeast of St. Petersburg, Kolpino was founded in 1722 as a workers' settlement around a sawmill and received city status in 1912. Its dominant industrial presence is the Izhorsky Works. Granted the Russian honorary title "City of Military Glory" in 2011, it sits within a wider region ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites and is connected to central St. Petersburg by rail on the Moscow–St. Petersburg main line.
