Kilwa Masoko

Tanzania

Kilwa Masoko is the mainland town that faces Kilwa Kisiwani, a UNESCO World Heritage island whose medieval Swahili ruins sit just across the water. Serving as the district headquarters of Kilwa since the 1960s, the town has a little airport and harbour with a customs post, making it the practical base for reaching the island. The wider region holds several additional UNESCO-listed sites.
