Kikwit
Congo - Kinshasa
Kikwit, the largest city of Kwilu Province in southwestern DR Congo, sits at the furthest navigable point of the Kwilu River and developed from a tiny village into a regional centre under Belgian colonial rule, when it became a hub of ivory, rubber, and later palm oil production. The city is the seat of the Catholic Diocese of Kikwit and is connected to Kinshasa by National Road 1. A 1995 Ebola outbreak brought the city international attention.
