Khe Sanh is best known as the site of one of the Vietnam War's most intense engagements: the 1968 Battle of Khe Sanh, which the Vietnamese have compared to Điện Biên Phủ. The former combat base north of town is now an open-air museum displaying war relics on the old airstrip, while much of the surrounding area has returned to wilderness or been planted with coffee and banana crops. The town itself, in Quảng Trị Province, has a small central core with cafés and restaurants.
