The principal commercial centre of southeastern Sierra Leone, Kenema is a city in the Eastern Province that serves as a key hub for regional trade linking the interior to cross-border markets. It sits close to mountains and within walking distance of water, with UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider region. The city also holds an internationally recognised role in infectious disease research, particularly around Lassa fever and Ebola.
