Kemi, a town in Finnish Lapland at the northern tip of the Gulf of Bothnia, draws winter visitors with two distinctive attractions: the Lumilinna Snow Castle and Hotel, and icebreaker cruises on the frozen gulf. Founded in 1869 by decree of Emperor Alexander II, the town sits at the mouth of the Kemijoki river, with a compact centre of cafés, restaurants, and shops. Tornio and the Swedish border lie a short distance to the west.
