This ancient Carian port city near Dalyan in Muğla Province, Kaunos dates its history to around the 10th century BC and is still under active archaeological excavation. Its rock-cut tombs are most easily viewed from across the Dalyan river, and a nearby sanctuary site has been identified close to the Sultaniye Spa. Once a major sea port with two harbours, the city was abandoned after a malaria epidemic in the 15th century AD and now sits several kilometres inland due to centuries of river silting.
