Kashihara, in Nara Prefecture, is considered in both mythology and historical scholarship to be the founding ground of Japan — the site where, according to tradition, Emperor Jimmu established the first imperial capital. The city holds the ruins of Fujiwara-kyō, the imperial capital built under Empress Jitō, along with Hon-Yakushi-ji temple ruins, Maruyama Kofun, and the Yamato Sanzan, all on UNESCO's Cultural Heritage Tentative List as part of the Asuka and Fujiwara Imperial Capitals.
