A city in south-central Turkey with a medieval centre built around a castle, several mosques, and a museum, Karaman sits at high elevation north of the Taurus Mountains. Settled since around 8000 BCE, the wider area holds underground cities, caves, and religious sites. The city also serves as a stopover on overland routes toward Adana and the south.
