Kalkarberg
Germany
Founded in 1230 and granted town rights around 1242, Kalkar is a pocket-sized municipality in North Rhine-Westphalia with a well-preserved medieval townscape near the Rhine. Its Catholic church of St. Nicolai holds one of the most significant late-medieval sacral interiors in Germany, making it the town's principal draw. A little central core offers cafés and restaurants, and the Rhine is close at hand.
