Kaala-Gomén
New Caledonia
This pocket-sized commune in the mountains of New Caledonia's North Province, Kaala-Gomén takes its name from a nearby mountain and the local Gomen tribe. Founded on its present site in 1899, it includes the village of Ouaco, known for a beef cannery and nickel mines operated by the Mining Society of the South Pacific, which open for annual heritage days. The wider region sits near UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the coast is a short drive away.
