Juiz de Fora

Juiz de Fora · Brazil

Once nicknamed "Manchester Mineira" for its early industrial prominence, Juiz de Fora is a large city in southeastern Minas Gerais, built along the Paraibuna river valley between the Serra dos Órgãos and Mantiqueira ranges. Its centre holds a concentration of historic churches, and the surrounding terrain offers scenic viewpoints. The city's name traces to a Portuguese Crown magistrate who briefly lodged at a local estate, lending it his title. Its Carnival has roots in the town's 1850s emancipation and remains a major annual event.
