Juazeiro do Norte, a city in the semiarid interior of Ceará in northeastern Brazil, is one of South America's largest pilgrimage sites, built around the legacy of the charismatic priest and politician Padre Cícero (1844–1934). Every November, thousands of followers gather here in his honour. The city is also considered one of Brazil's three great centres of popular religious devotion, alongside a strong tradition of artisanship and cordel literature from the broader northeastern region.
