Jõgeva
Estonia
Jõgeva, a compact town in central Estonia, is the birthplace of poet Betti Alver and composer Alo Mattiisen — a key figure in Estonia's Singing Revolution — both commemorated through annual festivals held in their honour. A museum dedicated to Alver opened in 2006. The town also holds a place in meteorological history: Estonia's coldest temperature ever recorded, –43.5 °C, was measured here in January 1940. The Pedja river runs along the town's eastern edge.
