Jocotan
Guatemala
This little town in Guatemala's Chiquimula department, close to the Honduran border and near mountains, Jocotán is home to Radio Chortis, a Roman Catholic radio station that broadcasts partly in Ch'orti', a language still spoken in isolated communities of the region. The town's Ch'orti' Maya heritage traces back to the Spanish conquest of the 16th century, when indigenous communities were displaced from productive lands to more arid terrain.
