Jilin City
Jilin Province · China
The Songhua River — known historically as the Sungari, meaning "white river" — winds through much of Jilin City, earning this large city in northeast China the nickname "River City." It is the only major Chinese city to share its name with its province, a distinction traceable to the Manchu name Girin Ula, meaning "along the river." The older hutong quarter, clustered near the riverbank, holds compact temples, mosques, and street food stalls. The city co-hosted the 2007 Asian Winter Games.
