This lakeside town in eastern Jalisco, Jamay sits on the shore of Lake Chapala with mountains in the surrounding terrain. The town square holds a monument to Pope Pius IX, and the calendar fills with religious celebrations — including Corpus Christi, the most widely observed — alongside independence day pageants each September. The name Jamay is thought to derive from an indigenous word meaning either "place of the Amulteca king Xama" or "place where adobe is made."
