One of the most ancient fortresses in western Russia stands in this tiny village in Pskov Oblast, close to the Estonian border. Izborsk — sometimes called Stary Izborsk to distinguish it from a neighbouring settlement — is among the oldest recorded Russian towns, mentioned in early chronicles alongside Smolensk and Polotsk. The fortress sits near water with scenic surroundings, and the village has several historic churches and a handful of cafés and restaurants for its size.
