Sitting on the Pacific coast of Fukushima Prefecture, Iwaki is a large city with a walkable centre offering a solid range of cafés and restaurants. Formed in 1966 from the merger of 14 smaller municipalities, it serves as the administrative, economic, and cultural hub of the Hamadōri coastal region. Each August, the city hosts the Taira Tanabata Festival over three days, and the surrounding area offers access to both the coastline and nearby mountains.
