Sitting on the right bank of the Danube in Romania's Tulcea County, Isaccea occupies one of the few points along the Lower Danube where the river can be easily forded — a geographic fact that made it a crossing point between the Balkans and the steppes to the north for thousands of years. Romans, Byzantines, and successive migrating peoples all held this small Dobrudjan town, leaving it with a layered history unusual for its size. The wider region includes UNESCO-listed Danube Delta territory.
