Inawashiro sits on the shore of Lake Inawashiro, Japan's fourth largest lake, where beach resorts, swimming, camping, and boating draw visitors to this compact Fukushima town. It is also the birthplace of Hideyo Noguchi, the physician whose research advanced understanding of syphilis and yellow fever. Mountains rise close to the town, adding hiking and winter sport options to the lake-based appeal.
