This regional hub on the northeastern bank of the Tocantins River in Maranhão, Imperatriz is the second-largest city in its state and a practical base for ecological tourism in the south and southwest of the region, including access to Chapada das Mesas. The Belém-Brasília Highway runs through the city, which sits at the border with Tocantins and serves as a commercial crossroads for a wide stretch of northern Brazil.
