A compact riverside town in Chile's Coquimbo Region, Illapel sits along the Illapel River at the country's narrowest point between the ocean and the Andes — just a short stretch of land separating two dramatic landscapes. Historically known as the "city of oranges," its name derives from a Mapudungun word meaning "throat of gold." The town centre has a concentration of cafés and restaurants within easy walking distance.
