Brazil's second-oldest city, Igarassu sits on the north coast of Pernambuco and is home to the oldest Catholic church in the country — the Church of Saints Cosme and Damião, built in 1535. Its historic centre, designated a national monument in 1972, holds further colonial-era structures including the Convent and Church of Santo Antônio, which houses a collection considered the most significant from Brazil's colonial period. The city lies within the greater Recife metropolitan area, close to the coast.
