In 2015, UNESCO designated Idanha-a-Nova a Creative City of Music, a distinction that sets apart this modest border town in east-central Portugal's Castelo Branco district. The municipality also contains Monsanto, an ancient fortified village where houses are built between enormous boulders and streets are carved from rock. King Afonso II granted the town its charter in 1219, distinguishing it from the older nearby settlement of Idanha-a-Velha.
