Ibb sits high in the Yemeni Mountains — historically nicknamed "The Land of Green" for the fertile, well-watered terrain that surrounds it — and serves as the capital of Ibb Governorate. Developed as a market town and administrative centre during the Ottoman period, it lies roughly between Aden and Sanaa on the main highland route, at an elevation that gives it a notably mild climate. The surrounding mountain ridges and green valleys define the city's character.
