Large city in eastern Guangdong designated as a national historic and cultural city in 2015, Huizhou has been known since ancient times as a prominent seat of Lingnan culture and a gateway to eastern Guangdong. The Song dynasty poet Su Dongpo is among the historical figures who lived here, leaving behind verse about the city. The East River runs through the urban centre, where it meets a tributary, with mountain ranges visible to the northwest and east.
