The main gateway city for Taroko Gorge on Taiwan's Pacific coast, Hualien is known locally as the "marble city" for its streets, pavements, and road dividers inlaid with marble offcuts — a byproduct of the city's marble-processing industry. The compact centre has a dense café and restaurant scene alongside a port, rail station, and airport that make it the principal transport hub for eastern Taiwan.
