This large city in northern Anhui Province known historically as Xiangcheng, Huaibei rose to prominence through coal mining and is also recognized for producing Kouzi Jiao liquor — earning it the informal titles of "coal city" and "liquor town." Several tributaries of the Huai River flow through the area, and the city sits near the borders of four provinces: Anhui, Jiangsu, Henan, and Shandong. High-speed rail connects it directly to Shanghai, Beijing, and Nanjing.
