Hit

Iraq

Hit, on the western bank of the Euphrates in Iraq's Al Anbar Governorate, is an ancient town whose bitumen wells supplied construction materials for Babylon more than three thousand years ago. It is still known for its functioning norias — traditional water wheels once central to irrigating palm groves and fields along the river — as well as hot springs. The old walled town, built across two mounds on the site of the ancient city of Is, was abandoned in the 1920s and has since deteriorated.
