Japan's largest apple-producing city, Hirosaki is a former castle town in western Aomori Prefecture whose centre holds a walkable concentration of Meiji-era Western-style buildings and a lively café and restaurant scene. The city developed under the Tsugaru clan and retains its castle, while the surrounding region offers mountain access and scenic viewpoints. Hirosaki is also widely photographed during cherry blossom season, and the wider Tohoku region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
