Hildburghausen, a small town in the southern, Franconian-influenced part of Thuringia, served as the residence capital of the Duchy of Saxe-Hildburghausen from 1680 to 1826. Set in mountain terrain in central Germany, it is today the administrative seat of its district and has a compact central core with cafés and restaurants.
