Haeju

North Korea

A port city on Haeju Bay in North Korea's mountain terrain, Haeju served as a provincial administrative centre through the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties and remains the capital of South Hwanghae Province today. The Gwangseok Stream runs through the city's centre before emptying into the bay, and Haeju Port sits on the Ryongdang Peninsula. The city became a significant hub for Sino-Korean trade in the early 20th century and retains an industrial base including chemical and cement production.
