A walkable Castilian city on the Henares river, Guadalajara in Spain's Castilla–La Mancha region has a historic centre dense with churches and cafés, set on a plateau between two deep ravines. Founded in the 9th century under the Emirate of Córdoba — its name derived from the Arabic for "river of stones" — it later flourished under the Mendoza family and was granted city status in 1460. The surrounding area offers scenic views over La Alcarria.
