The county seat of Pitt County, North Carolina, Greenville sits on the Tar River and serves as the region's hub for health, education, and entertainment. East Carolina University, the fourth-largest in the University of North Carolina System, anchors much of the city's cultural life, alongside ECU Health Medical Center, the second-largest hospital in the state. The city has seen sustained economic growth since the 1990s and hosts regional and national headquarters for several major companies.
