Pico da Ibituruna, a peak visible from nearly every part of the city, draws hang-gliding and paragliding competitors to Governador Valadares, a mid-sized city in Minas Gerais, Brazil, set on the banks of the Doce River. The city's settlement consolidated around 1907 with the arrival of the Vitória-Minas Railway, and later grew through mica and gemstone extraction. Annual events include the GV Folia carnival and the Expoagro GV agricultural fair.
