Gorkha Municipality in Nepal's Gandaki Province is the birthplace of Prithvi Narayan Shah, the king who unified and founded modern Nepal, and the hilltop Gorkha Durbar palace complex — damaged in the 2015 earthquake but still home to the Gorakhnath shrine and Kalika temple, both open without charge — remains the town's central draw. It also serves as a starting point for trekking routes toward Mount Manaslu and the Ganesh Himal range.
